About the project
Many of the "where do I go next to upskill and get a job in AI safety?" resources are too sparse and unspecific. This project will create a document that compiles this information neatly and efficiently, guiding people to programs that are best fit for their skill level and career trajectory. The document will be published and shared around with anyone who can benefit from it.
Work on this project will involve doing whatever is necessary to get a good answer to the question, "Where should somebody with any given background go next to progress their AI safety career?" The answer to this question will then be written up into either an EA Forum post or custom website.
Working on this project might involve reading from a variety of sources, listening to podcasts, interviewing successful workers to learn how they did what they did, or something else.
This project may also include searching for and executing on creative ways to publicize the results: how can we make sure the people who would most benefit from this resource can find it?
Theory of change
This project has two levels to its theory of change:
- For the doc itself: Having access to good career progress resources can accelerate many people's career development. It makes it much easier for people to know where they should go next.
- For the mentee: I want more people to have a good understanding of the AI safety community and how to move through it, so that they can give valuable career advice to anyone who asks for it. Many of the most valuable people in the community are fieldbuilders and accelerators who help connect other people to their jobs, and by doing a project like this, a mentee can get some of the necessary context to do this well.
Your role
I have many starting points and ideas for how to start this project, but I expect the mentee to do most of the work of doing the research, creating the doc, and publicizing the results.
Prerequisites
I would like a mentee who genuinely cares about x-risks, can think carefully about things, and can write decently well. Ideally, this would also be someone who is/plans to get heavily involved in a university EA or AI safety group.
